A Practical Look at Creep and Shrinkage in Bridge Design

چکیده
R f search has produced two major procedures for assessing creep and shrinkage; the ACI 209 method' and the CE$-FJP method.' Laboratory research into concrete creep and shrinkage has been conducted for decades, and excellent analytical procedures for evaluating structures for creep and shrinkage have been presented in the literature.'-5 Creep and shrinkage are factors in the design of a variety of bridge details. (The focus here will he on creep, for its treatment is somewhat more involved than that of shrinkage. However, the conclusions apply to both as elements of time dependent deformations.) Creep affects the setting of bearings and the size of sliding plates or laminated bearing pads, it affects the size and setting of expansion joints, and it affects the amount of girder shortening due to prestress and the corresponding loss of prestress, thereby also affecting the secondary moments in a prestressed girder bridge. The amount and character of creep influences the redistribution of forces in certain , structures where the statical system changes during construction, and can, therefore, play a major role in stress distribution for cornposite construction. Creep must be considered in the context of the entire design. The major effects of creep in concrete bridge structures can be summarized in three categories: — Camber and deflection Prestress loss — Stress redistribution Where stress and strength is concerned, it is general practice to base engineering design on a conservative upper bound of demand, not on average demand. However, with creep we have an interest in both. Camber and deflection control i ,or a free cantilever bridge

OPTIMUM DESIGN OF LONG-TERM DEFLECTION IN SEGMENTED PRESTRESS BRIDGES BY CONSIDERING THE EFFECTS OF CREEP AND SHRINKAGE
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the long-term vertical deformations of segmented pre-tensioned concrete bridges by a new approach. It provides a practical and reliable method for calculating the amount of long-term deformation based on creep and shrinkage in segmented prestress bridges. There are various relationships for estimating the creep and shrinkage of concrete. The analytical r...
متن کاملEffect of Link Slab on Seismic Response of Two Span Straight and Skew Bridges
Highway bridges are frequently constructed as simple span structures with steel or concrete girders and a cast-in-place concrete deck, spanning from one pier to another. At each end of the simple span deck, a joint is provided for deck movement due to temperature, shrinkage, and creep. Bridge deck joints are expensive and pose many problems with regard to bridge maintenance. Elimination of deck...
متن کاملShrinkage and Creep Properties of High-Strength Concrete Up To 120 MPa
Recently, the use of high-strength concrete has become more popular due to the availability and significant variety of the admixtures. High-strength concrete increases the load carrying capacity of the columns, therefore, reduces their sizes in buildings and bridges. In bridges, high-strength concrete could result in reduction of number of girders as well as an increase in the span length which...
متن کاملChallenges in Structural Health Monitoring 22 Us-japan Bridge Engineering Workshop Seattle, Washington
Structural health monitoring through field instrumentation has been carried out successfully on many highway bridges to monitor the short-term and long-term performance of structures. Properly designed and strategically placed instruments can help collect valuable data regarding the condition, the stress and strain, deflection, temperature gradients, and the time-dependent properties, such as c...
متن کاملDrying and Cracking Effects in Box-girder Bridge Segment
This paper deals with the effect of drying as a moisture diffusion process in a segment of a typical box-girder bridge. Pore relative humidity distributions throughout the cross sections of the plates of the girder are calculated from the diffusion equation, taking its nonlinearity and aging into account. The effect of creep with aging on the stresses produced by drying shrinkage is taken into ...
